Herbsttour auf den Preber

A scenic hike on the Preber in the golden autumn

The Preber is one of the region’s most scenic mountains, and a hike on the Preber offers impressive experiences of nature in every season. The mountain showed itself at its very best in autumn in particular: clear air, warm colours and stunning views into the distance accompanied us on our autumn hike up the Preber.

Our hike began right at the Grazer Hütte on the Preber. Early in the morning at 7.00 am, just in time for sunrise, we set off on a varied day’s hike to the summit of the Preber.

From the Grazer Hütte via the Speikboden to the Preber

The first few metres of ascent lead from the Grazer Hütte towards the Preberhalterhütte via the Speikboden. After a short climb, the path becomes pleasant and winds along the slope through the autumnal mountain landscape. The view down to the idyllically situated Prebersee, in particular, leaves you wanting more.

Ascent to the Preber summit via the southern slope

At the Preberhalterhütte/Preber junction, the character of the walk changes. From here, the path climbs steadily – and at times steeply – up the southern slope towards the summit. With every metre of altitude, the view becomes more impressive and the anticipation of reaching the summit grows.

From the Roßscharte, a wonderful view to the east opened up. The Grazer Hütte was also clearly visible from above, reminding us of where our tour had begun.

The final steep ascent to the summit demanded a little more stamina. Once at the top, however, we were rewarded for our efforts: a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains awaited us.

Descent via the Mühlbachtörl and the Preberkessel

For the return journey, we chose the descent via the Mühlbachtörl. This section leads steeply downhill and requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. We had to concentrate fully on our footing before reaching the Mühlbachtörl. From the Mühlbachtörl, it’s also possible to continue climbing towards Roteck – though we wouldn’t recommend this additional ascent.

Our route then took us through the beautiful Preberkessel down towards the Preberhalterhütte. The tranquil landscape and alpine atmosphere made this section particularly varied. We were accompanied time and again by the whistling of marmots, which are found in great numbers in this area.

From the Preberhalterhütte, we finally made our way back via the Speikboden to the Grazer Hütte am Preber, our starting point for the tour.

Weather & tour planning

Alpine Club Weather

  • Comprehensible text descriptions of the weather data by Geosphere Austria
  • Comprehensive presentation of the general weather situation in the Eastern and Western Alps with important parameters (temperature, zero degree limit, wind, fresh snow)
  • Detailed descriptions for individual Alpine regions and mountain groups
  • Ideal for an initial overview and basic tour planning
  • Updated once a day.
